Hard work

The sleep of a laboring man is sweet

Scripture of the week

2 Thessalonians 3:10

“For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat”

Message

This week we will be talking about what the scriptures have to say about working hard…

God wants us to work hard, in fact that is why we are here on earth. We are here to experience mortality and mortality is hard.

In Alma 38:12 of the Book of Mormon it says…

“Use boldness, but not overbearance; and also see that ye bridle all your passions, that ye may be filled with love; see that ye refrain from idleness”

This scripture is telling us specifically to refrain from idleness because God knows how bad being idle is he wants to warn us to stay away from it.

God wants us to labor for many reasons. One thing is that God wants us to take care of ourselves, our family, our community, and the afflicted. Also laboring is good, as it says in Ecclesiastes 5:12 “The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.”

I look at this scripture as saying that working and laboring is fulfilling, because at the end of the day you will sit back and think about all you accomplished, not all the rest you might have had that day.

Here are some additional things you can study throughout the week…

  • Exodus 2:8-10

  • Proverbs 10:4

  • Proverbs 20:13
